Class #3 Wrap Up

Because of the holiday, we will be shifting things around in the following ways:

1) Essay 1 Part 2 is due on Monday, September 10th (3 copies in class)
2) In addition, read the following pages in Seeing & Writing: 378-382, 393-405.
3) There is no response due on Monday, but expect to be asked to prove you've read the work.

Generally, as the prompt for Part 1 suggested, finding a successful advertisement and then changing your approach is usually easier than trying to force the issue with a poor one. While it does mean that you'll have to eventually find negative details on the new ad, realize that this gets much much easier with practice.

If you choose, however, to stick with your ad, remember that most analyses can be reworked to center around gender stereotyping/exploitation. That is, if you have an ad that is largely green, with a single figure of a woman in it, and while you may have said that green symbolizes luxury and wealth, you can refocus your analysis to argue that the color symbolizes the woman's greed, and is thus a negative portrayal.
